Along with the initial success came the need to recycle more. Many materials have since been
added to the blue box such as coloured newsprint, magazines, junk mail, egg cartons,
cardboard, boxboard, aerosol containers, paint cans, aluminium foil, not to mention the huge variety of plastic bottles, tubs and bags the growth has resulted in an overwhelming increase
in the volume and weight of materials collected. The increase was managed by many
with the introduction of larger blue boxes, distribution of more containers, and
increased collection frequency.

The overflowing boxes are causing litter in an environment we are trying to clean and
degradingthe materials we are trying to recover. The handling of multiple boxes reduces the efficiency of the collection increasing costs and causing injuries. Today, as we attempt
to collect some 17 materials, the blue box has simply outgrown itself and a new system
is needed to continue to drive recycling.
