To assist recycling of plastic containers, in 1988, the Plastic Bottle Institute of
the Society of the Plastics Industry devised the now-familiar scheme to mark
plastic bottles by plastic type. The symbol used is a mobius loop (recycling arrows) with a number inside identifying the resin family used to make the container. This DOES NOT mean that a container is recyclable nor does it mean that is has recycled content. It simply assists us in identifying its potential recyclability depending on available markets.
