The
Program
On
September 17th, 1981
, the first ever, blue box recycling program was launched in Kitchener,
Ontario. Today, more than 90% of Ontario's households have access to
recycling programs and annually they divert more than 650,000 tonnes of
secondary resource materials. The
"blue box" program has expanded in various forms throughout Canada
and to countries around the world such as the
United States, United Kingdom, France and Australia serving more than 40
million households in countries around the world.
The
United Nations recognized Ontario's success by awarding the first ever
United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) Award jointly to Ontario
Multi-Material Recycling Inc. (soft drink industry in Ontario), the
provincial government and the Recycling Council of Ontario, on behalf of
all Ontarians.
The
Association's first blue box recycling program was launched on
September 5, 1989. In fact, the
Bluewater Recycling Association was founded to provide the blue box program to rural households. It
remains our primary focus as the cornerstone of the Association.
Today,
our municipalities collect many recyclable items such as magazines,
catalogues, soft and hard cover books, cardboard, boxboard, aluminium
foil and trays, aerosol containers, paint cans, plastic bottles, plastic
tubs and plastic film, as well as newspapers, metal cans and glass
bottles and jars. The
Association processes over 2 million pounds of materials per month at
its material recovery facility in Huron Park. |
