Virtual
Tour
Here
is a photo-album of the Bluewater Recycling plant in Huron Park, Ontario.
This is a graphic intensive page, so please be patient while the pictures
load.
All
materials delivered to the Association's Material Recovery Facility in
Huron Park (near Exeter) are weighed.
The
first compartment to be unloaded is
paper
fibres that have been collected.
The
paper fibres, which include newspapers, magazines, telephone books,
writing paper, cardboard, boxboard, other paper products like egg cartons,
and plastic grocery bags are loaded on our in-feed conveyor with a skid
steer loader.
Six
people normally sort the paper fibres into acceptable grades for end
markets. We typically separate them into 1) Cardboard, 2) Boxboard, 3)
Plastic Bags, and 4) Mixed Newspapers (includes magazines, phone books
etc.) The way you prepare the materials at the curb really helps
here.
We
empty the second compartment in the truck in
the
container receiving area where we accept
the
metal, plastic and glass containers.
We
use a lot of mechanical tools to separate the containers based on their
individual properties such as size, density, and magnetic tendencies.
However the first step is to make sure the containers are not bagged, tied
or too bulky so the equipment can handle it.
The
steel is removed magnetically and the glass is separated by an air
classification system. The aluminum is sorted by using eddy current
technology and screens. The plastics are sorted by hand into three
separate resins PET, HDPE and mixed tubs.
Every
material processed by the Association, except glass, is then baled and
stored indoors away from the elements to ensure a superior marketable
commodity. While we prefer to sell our materials locally in Ontario, many
go to the US and some overseas as far as China where their growing economy
has a huge appetite for the types of resources we have.
